The Backhouse name is thought to have originated in shipping but the family is more renowned as industrialists, bankers and horticulturalists who were plant collectors and the forerunners for breeding the modern daffodil. Their garden was bought over 14 years ago by Andrew and Caroline Thomson who have worked tirelessly to renovate the walled garden and promote the work of previous Backhouse generations.
The roses were at their peak whilst the bear walk and grotto would entertain both old and young alike. The weather was kind for eleven members to stroll around the grounds, sun themselves in the walled garden admire the various water features, and cool off along the dappled shade of the woodland walks.
A modestly priced menu in the cafĂ© rounded the afternoon’s visit. Very many thanks to our hosts for the time taken to give us a private tour and answer our questions. Another good afternoon’s visit for the RHS of Perthshire.
