Perthshire Citizen Class

It’s the start of August and the society is preparing for the annual summer show.  Since 1806 the Royal Horticultural Society of Perthshire’s Summer Flower Show has been held in August and this year it is on Friday 17th between 1pm and 4pm and again on Saturday 18th August from 10am to 4.30pm in the Burnside Halls Scone PH2 6LP.  In a little over two weeks there will over 150 classes of cut flower, potted plants, fruit and vegetables filling the main hall. As the weather has been so warm and sunny many blooms and crops will be at their best earlier in the season so there will be a different range of exhibits on show this year to previous  shows.  Soft fruit  has been one of the winning crops this summer producing very flavoursome berries whilst it must be the earliest crop of cucumbers and tomatoes on record for many gardeners. It may be that your garden has produced prize winning yields or blooms that you would like to share with others then do dig out that schedule or down load a copy from www.rhsofperthshire.co.uk.. With the formation of The Rose Society UK a new award is a Bronze medal to be awarded to the best exhibit in the rose section  which is an ideal challenge for amateur rose lovers. Roses are found in most gardens and have done remarkably well  with this summer’s conditions. All you need to do is cut and exhibit the prized blooms on the Thursday 16th from 5pm. If you are a novice then do not despair there’s plenty of  seasoned exhibitors to offer help.

It was only after the printing of the schedule that it became apparent that there would be no Garden News Top Tray or Top Vase as their sponsors had withdrawn support . Don’t feel down hearted for the same produce or blooms that you may have earmarked for this class can be presented in other classes within the show.

The lazy days have offered opportunities for handicraft making in the sun or getting out and about with a thought to the photographic classes. Look up the class titles and join in on these classes. Even paintings from a day at the beach may be exhibited in the handicraft section. All ages are catered for with the children’s section inspiring craft making for up to eighteen year olds. Get your children and grand children to spend time in the school holidays being creative specifically for presenting in these categories. There’s plenty to celebrate in the floral art classes too as the societies’  Royal Horticultural Society of Perthshire’s Floral Art Club is celebrating its diamond anniversary in 2018 lending plenty of sparkle to at least one of the nine floral design classes.

Our shows have always been very successful because of the superb support  from members as exhibitors and visitors so do come again and feel the buzz of being part of one of the oldest horticultural society in the UK.
