Lucky members saw how Paul Neil has tamed the walled garden at Balhary on the second of the society garden visits this year. His boundless enthusiasm has seen fruit and vegetable caging cheat the local wild birds out of succulent crops that end up on some of the most prestigious restaurant tables in the area. Lavender borders fringe the many paths lined with apple and pear trees that may be as old as two hundred years whilst dahlias and chrysanthemums bring colour to the working areas but pay their way too by being cut for sale.

Rejuvenated by tasty samples of gooseberries, cherries and cucamelons en route our group finished the visit with a stroll around his personal garden which incorporates a newly completed water feature. This was followed by tea and melt -in-the-mouth home cooking from Terri, the other half of the garden venture.

What a wonderful afternoon and we’d love to come back to see progress next year! Thanks
